What is the Zero Tolerance Policy in Ice Hockey?

John Smith
In ice hockey, the zero-tolerance policy was created by USA hockey in an effort to improve the game. It affects players, coaches, referees, and even spectators. Basically, its main purpose is to help protect the ice hockey officials. The zero-tolerance policy emphasizes proper conduct in the ice arena.

For players, the zero-tolerance policy penalizes actions or words said to officials. Players are not allowed to argue with any call that a referee makes. Additionally, they are not allowed to use obscene language at any point, even if it is not directed towards anybody in particular. Finally, they are not allowed to use obscene gestures to show they disagree with a referee's call.

The zero-tolerance policy also applies to coaches. Much like with players, coaches are not allowed to dispute any decision a referee makes. Additionally, they cannot use obscene language or gestures in an attempt to intimidate the referee. They also are not allowed to stand on the boards or in the doorway to the ice in an attempt to intimidate anyone on the ice, including the referees.

Parents and spectators are also affected by the zero-tolerance policy. They receive the same treatment as players and coaches in that they are not allowed to use obscene language or gestures towards anyone involved in the game. Additionally, the game can even be stopped if the spectator is too out of control. They will then be forced to leave the arena and time lost due to a curfew will not be replaced. These violations include things such as taunting officials, threats of violence, or even throwing things onto the playing surface. Parents are not allowed to wait around after the game and taunt or insult the referees or the calls made during the game.

Finally, officials are also held to the zero-tolerance policy. The same rules apply to other people on the ice also apply to the referees. They are expected to conduct themselves professionally and never taunt any coach or players on the ice. They are responsible for conducting the game properly and making sure that everyone participating has a rewarding experience and plays safely.
