What's the Best Insurance Plan for Your Teen?

Sabah Karimi
Since car insurance plans for teenagers tend to be fairly expensive, parents responsible for paying for insurance need to shop around and find a plan that keeps teens safe but also fits within the family budget. Insurance coverage for teenagers are typically added right on to the parent's policy, and in some cases, the cost of insurance for the teenager is much lower than if the teen purchased a policy on their own. Still, the average prices for teen car insurance are much higher than the national average because teens are considered to be high risk drivers.

Finding the Best Insurance Plans for Teens
Insurance companies consider several factors when calculating the cost of the insurance premium for teens. It's generally a good idea to shop around and request quotes from at least three or four different insurance companies. Let them know that you are shopping for the best rate, and be prepared to provide information on your teen's driving record, vehicle and what the teenager will be using the vehicle for.

Remember that insurance companies do consider teens to be high risk drivers, no matter how long they have been driving a vehicle. Some teens are eligible for a car insurance discount. A "good student discount" is extended to some teens who are on the honor roll for a certain period of time, because students who maintain good grades may be more responsible. Teens who take driver's education or driver safety courses may also be eligible to receive a lower premium, because these courses can make a student a much better driver.

Making sure your teen is driving a safe and practical car - instead of a sports car or a vehicle that may be difficult to maneuver - can also keep insurance premiums at a minimum. All insurance companies will take the make and model of the vehicle into account when calculating insurance costs. Vehicles that have a high theft rate tend to command higher insurance policies.

Getting the Best Insurance Plan for Teens
If you are adding a teenager to your family car insurance policy, you will need to provide the insurance company with specific details about your teen's vehicle, how often and where they will be driving the vehicle, whether they have taken any traffic school courses outside of driver's education in high school, and if they are a good student. Your insurance company will explain all the different insurance plans available and recommend a plan that covers teens and passengers in the vehicle in the event of an accident.
