The warm water surf wax is harder and doesn't melt as easily in the hot sun. While the cold water surfboard wax is much softer. Which makes it easier to apply to your surfboard, and it is actually quite sticky. So if you are surfing in an area that requires you to wear a full wet suit with booties and you have applied the wax evenly and quite thick you will have a good chance of not slipping off the board.
Before I reveal what surf-wax I prefer, I would like to tell you a bit about applying the wax. I like alot of wax, some surfers do not. I start with a thin coat on what ever part of the board that I feel that I will be standing on. Now I sometimes find myself standing on parts of the surfboard that I normally would not. So as I said I like plenty of wax. Once you get a thin coat of surf wax on the board, exclude your traction pad of course. Then start another coat.
Build up a few layers of wax apply in circular motion. I like it thick ,I used to apply only 2-3 layers to my boards but now I do about 5 coats, seriously. I do not like being in the water and having all my wax wear off when I am surfing, also I do not like caring wax in my shorts so I tend to put more surf wax than I really need. Sure it gets on your car if you do not have a surfboard case. Get a case and protect your surfboard.
You will find that your surfboard has less dings and you wont get surfboard wax all over your vehicles. So get a surfboard bag, even if you have to make your own. Well I actually prefer Sex Wax for my surfboards, it applies very easily it sticks to my boards and for over 25 years it has always been good quality. I have purchased other waxes and they are not as consistent in their quality. The smell of sex wax is unique and all I have to do is have one sitting on my desk and it brings back memories of the great sessions that I have had. Its priced right also. So you might want to give it a try if you haven't already.
