What's the Big Deal About Saying Merry Christmas?

My Reasons for Hating the Holidays

Rachel Pickett
So, I've never been one to get mushy about the holidays, or even excited to say the least. The magic died for me a long, long time ago. So far gone are the days when I looked foward to seeing my family, was happy to hear christmas music, and truly loved the winter holiday season.

Each year as I get older I become more aggravated with the holiday season. Just the sheer fact we all say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas really pisses me off. The word holiday is too broad to encompass a single day. There are literally hundreds of holidays all year long. I'm a Christian, raised a Christian, and will always be a Christian. I will ALWAYS say Merry Christmas. But how merry can Christmas really be when it's crammed down our throats since two weeks before thanksgiving? By the time it actually rolls around, I'm sick of it.

What is the big freakin deal about the commercialization of Christmas anyway? I don't want your thoughtless gifts. I don't need all that dumb crap. If I want something, I'll get it for myself. What I really need is to know I am loved and cared for by my family and friends. If you think some cheap christmas card from walmart is going to show me that, you are wrong. How about a phone call? How about stopping by for a visit? Maybe you could just ask me how I am doing and say those three words we all need to hear every so often; I love you.

And no, I'm not going to give my hard earned money to charity so stop asking me. Stop ringing your bells outside of every store. I just want to pick up my groceries, thank you. Like most people I do not have cash or change to give you anyway. I have a debit card and a mastercard. Even if I did have cash, what warrants me giving it to you? What ever happened to volunteering and actually putting a face to the needs out there. I think more people should volunteer instead of give money, it might help bring some much needed humility to all of us, and a sense of REAL thankfulness for the things we are lucky to have. Life could be worse and it may not hurt to actually see this in reality.

I'd also like to state for the record that I'm not buying gifts for your rude, spoiled, bratty, and rotten children just because it's christmas. Why isn't it enough to spend time with your family and friends during christmas without having to buy them something? Often, for me this is the ONLY time of year I get to see all of my family and friends. Why isn't that enough? No one remembers the fact I haven't been home in a year, all they remember is I came home without gifts. Who cares? At least I was there.

And last but not least concerning the "holidays"........if you don't go to church the rest of the year, you have no business being there on Christmas either. People who cannot commit to God all year long are not going to be saved during a 1-2 hour church service once a year. Puh-lease, give me a break you hypocrites! I'm not saying we need to go to church every Sunday, cause I sure don't. I haven't been to church regularly in over 10 years, and I definitely will not be there this Christmas either.

Please, stop and think about what's actually important, and what really matters.

Most of all I'd like to say MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!! Because after all, it is the Christmas season not the holidays.

I think that if you're a Christian, and you believe in the birth of Jesus, you should say Merry Christmas unapologetically; however, there are people who aren't Christian, and if some people choose to say "Happy Holidays," we shouldn't fret it. We're all different, but noone should take Christmas away from Christians either. :) Cheers, and hope you had a Merry Christams!!
