What's New on Dancing with the Stars

Rick Limpert
The 10th season of Dancing With The Stars kicked off tonight and there were many changes this season from the previous 9.

A new co-host, new professional dancers, a strong diverse cast of celebrity dancers and only 11 contestants, so the competition is guaranteed to heat up in a hurry.

This season features celebrities that actually have quite a bit of dance experience. Erin Andrews was a Gator Girl dancer while at the University of Florida. Nicole Scherzinger has danced routines in her group The Pussycat Dolls, and Figure skater Evan Lysacek is accustomed to performing to music during his skating routines.

Brooke Burke, a former contestant joined Tom as the co-host this season, and Damien Whitewood is a new professional dancer on the show. He'll partner with Pamela Anderson.

Among the highlights:

Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke. Ochocinco didn't look like a rookie out on the dance floor. He received three 6's from the judges, but I thought his performance was a little better than that. If he keeps working hard and keeps listening to Cheryl's advice he should stay on for a few more weeks.

Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Erin is expected to be good, the judges liked her and Maks looks like he has a better partner this time around.

Evan Lysacek andAnna Trebunskaya. Evan looked as good on the dance floor as he did on ice. He looks like he could be a professional dancer. A great score for his first dance, 23 points.

Buzz Aldrin and Ashly Costa. What more can you say about an 80 year old astronaut out on the dance floor? It may not have been the best dance, but it was still a highlight for me to see it.

Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough. Derek always gets the best out of his partners. This looks like the case again this year. Nicole was graceful and hit all the marks. This waltz was great for the first week. They received a 25 for their effort.

Needs to improve:

Shannon Doherty and Mark Ballas. Shannon is going to have to improve in a hurry. She is not expected to be a crowd favorite as far as the voting goes, so she's going to have to earn a bunch of points from the judges. Mark Ballas has his work cut out for him, but he's a good teacher. They will have to better than the three 6's next time out.

Jake "The Bachelor" and

Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel. Lots of energy and action, but lots of mistakes and glitches.Chelsie Hightower. He also needs to improve quickly. He was a bit stiff, he needs to improve on his footwork too. He received a generous 20 from the judges.

Kate Gosselin and Tony Dovolani. Kate was nervous, her footwork was bad, and she's not a seasoned performer. Tony is a good teacher, so maybe she'll be better next week.
