A Race to Witch Mountain, a Project Runway and the Flight of the Conchords

Grant Bracken
Are you tired of the summer of robot movies? Do you find yourself struggling to get excited about G. I. Joe? Does your poor TV remain lifeless as it waits for the new fall lineup? If you answered yes to any of these questions than the answer to your late summer boredom might be the slew of new DVDs that are coming out in August. I have taken a look at each release date and scoured the list to find those releases that will be worth watching. Here are my top five DVDs to pick up in the first week of August.

5) Race to Witch Mountain
Single Disk Edition: 15.99$ at Amazon.com
Two Disk Extended Edition: 22.99$ at Amazon.com
Blu-Ray Edition: 27.99$ at Amazon.com

So most folks might have missed this movie when it came to theaters. You might of thought it was worth missing and you might have been right. I am not sure if this movie is worth the big screen viewing but it is in fact a decent film. There is some good acting and for a kids movie there are some solid funny moments. It's a little silly but in a good way. You get a ton of extra features and a digital copy if you get either the two-disk edition or the Blu-Ray version but honestly it was not that great of a movie to deserve so much extra information. I would get the single disk edition unless your kids really liked the film.

4) Project Runway Season 5
Full Collection on DVD: 19.99$ at Amazon.com

I am no fashion expert so you would think I would have no business watching Project Runway. That's the best part about the show; you don't need to know clothes to get into it. The program may be all about fashion but is also a show filled with interesting real life folks and creative challenges. It's an addictive format that is hard not to get drawn into. This season is not as great as the ones that came before it but it is worth picking up. The DVD includes extended scenes and a featurette about what happened to season 5's winner after the show was over.

3) The Soloist
DVD Edition: 16.99$ at Amazon.com
Blu-Ray Edition 26.99$ at Amazon.com

This is a very good movie starring Jamie Foxx as a brilliant yet mad street musician that is befriended by a newspaper reporter played by Robert Downey Jr. It is a story that pulls at the heartstrings, sometimes a little too often. This movie might feel a bit like Oscar bait but the two leads give good performances and the story is compelling. Both the DVD and the Blu-Ray come loaded with features like a directors commentary, making of feature and some extra scenes. This drama is definitely worth picking up.

2) The Tigger Movie
10th Anniversary Edition: 19.99$ at Amazon.com

It's hard to imagine that this movie came out only ten years ago. I almost forget that I was not a kid when I saw it for the first time because it made such a strong connection with that child inside of me. This is a great kids movie with amazing voice talent. It was so good that it single handily brought back the Winnie the Pooh franchise and made a whole new group of kids fall in love with the Hundred Acre Wood. This new edition is well worth the price for its filled with all sorts of extras that help add to the magic.

1) Flight of the Conchords: Season Two
Full Collection on DVD: 16.99 at Amazon.com

Few shows have made me laugh quite like this one does. For those who don't know the premise of the show is simple. It's about two guys from New Zealand trying to make it as a very quirky folk band in New York City. It might not seem like much but it is hilarious. The music is great and the actors are fantastic. It has this lovely handheld camera feel to it. It is unlike anything else on TV right now and you pick it up the moment it comes out. If you have not watched an episode before, also pick up Season One that is as good as the sophomore effort.
