What's the Future of American Idol?

Simon's Leaving, What's Next?

D Trem
The future of American Idol is looking bleak. Nutty Paula Abdul left last season. The shows backbone, Simon Cowell, is leaving this season. What's left you ask? Not much. The show isn't even rich with talented contestants now. This season's show was filled with subpar, acoustic rock John Mayer-lite contestants. No one has outstanding talent. Viewer ship for Fox's most popular show is also down. The American public is simply no longer interested in this show.

Ellen DeGeneres has been a great addition, but she doesn't have any legitimate music experience. She doesn't even give good, constructive criticism to the contestants. She is very comforting and kind though. Randy Jackson is just there at this point. He rarely contributes anything to the show. Kara DioGuardi is too busy showing off her bikini body to contribute anything useful. Simon Cowell is the only judge who gives good criticism. He represents what the public really thinks.

The format of the show is also getting old. There is nothing new or fresh about American idol. Pants on the ground aside, the auditions are boring and pitiful. The strategically placed marketing and endorsements from companies like Ford and Coke are also obnoxious. I know American Idol has to pay the bills, but they need to get rid of some of the fluff. American Idol needs to shorten the episodes it airs every week. Switch it up a bit. Do something different American Idol! The show will not continue to show longevity if it doesn't evolve and grow.

American Idol is a huge money maker for Fox, but the show is losing steam. American idol winners don't sell records the way they use to. Kris Allen and Adam Lambert's records have not even sold a million units. Jordin Sparks second LP flopped miserably, while Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, and Fantasia have been completely forgotten. The only American Idol stars who have a fighting chance in the music industry are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. They are the only winners who have had multiple platinum albums, hits, and Grammy wins.

American Idol is a sinking ship unless something changes immediately. Viewership of the show will continue to dip. It will most likely linger for a few years after Simon leaves though. Interest needs to be regained. A new aspect of the show needs to be introduced. American Idol was ground breaking; now it's just plain boring.

*Quote*This is an editorial. my personal opinion. I have a higher standard of a successful entertainer. I read Billboard on a regular basis thank you very much. I didn't refer to the success of Pickler, Hudson, or Daughtry because I was using American idol winners. I could care less if any of you disagree with me.*Quote*
Um...obviously you really don't know what you're talking about ....your statement above says you were referring to "winners" and thats why you didn't mention Hudson, Pickler, Daughtry....
If that's the case...why mention Clay Aiken?
    You're a journalist?

In a world of immediate gratification I expect nothing less than a silly article like this one. Although Idol has lost viewership, in what universe is 16-19 million viewers a flop. Yes it needs a face lift but to suggest that someone like Clay Aiken is no where to be seen is to be ignorant of the facts. I would also mention several others who are making small fortunes in the entertainment world. Entertainment has many faces and not all success is found in the top 40 of teeny bop music. Open your eyes and do some research. Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, David Cook, Daughtry, Kellie Pickler, David Archuleta and many others too numerous to mention are all taking a lot more to the bank than you could ever hope for. These are all successful entertainers.

D Trem -- if you want a career in journalism, this isn't a good way to start. Did you look at the Billboard lists of successful artists for last year? Did you notice the LONG list of Idol names on it? In an era of disastrous CD sales, many Idol alums are doing way better than just okay in CD & ticket sales, grammys and radio play, not only Clarkson and Underwood. Examples: Daughtry, Cook, Kellie Pickler (surprise I know, but check your facts!)Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Clay Aiken. Idol's ratings are down a few million -- big deal!

I agree that you do need a "fact checker". Clay hasn't disappeared. Just took time off to spend time with his son and to record a new album with a new company. The fans are waiting with excitement! If you don't follow a singer then you probably don't know what they are up to, that goes for any singer, Idol or not.

I think you need a new "fact checker." Clay Aiken is not forgotten by his large group of fans. He starred on Broadway and has sold over 10 million CDs world-wide. In March, he taped a concert that will be a PBS special this summer...........sold out tours, etc.

I do agree about IDOL. It is past its prime and I haven't watched it since season 5.
