A Brief Overview

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is a wonderful school located just outside Baltimore City in Catonsville, Maryland. To some, the university might seem to be a community school, only accepting students from Maryland. But the variety of people you'd meet here would blow your mind. We have students from states all over the country and even some students from around the world. The population of our students varies in race, religion, nationality, language, and educational desires. Many of our students are commuters while others live on campus in one of many dormitories or apartment communities. The university also employees students in several different areas of the campus including but not limited to the dining hall, The Commons, and the transit office.

Academic Majors and Minors

The school offers numerous majors and minors for students so that everyone can find something that interests them. UMBC offers 40 majors and 40 minors along with 14 certificate programs. The majors and minors at UMBC include the sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences. The university also has numerous Pre-Professional programs for students interested in attending Medical, Dental or other Professional schools.

Athletics

UMBC has a wonderful variety of sports teams for students to join whether club or varsity. The university offers 11 Varsity sports and 24 Club sports. Every student has a chance to do something athletic that interests him or her even if they've never played the sport before. Many players on the club teams have either never played or have limited experience in the sport. Winning is important but athletics at UMBC is all about having fun.

Theatre at UMBC

Whether you choose to major or minor in Theatre or not, the Theatre at UMBC is something you should check out. An average of 80-90 students a year are accepted to the Theatre program and put on wonderful productions. The students either emphasize their studying in acting or production and make coming out to their programs worthwhile.

The Commons

The Commons, which was opened in 2002, has become one of the most frequently visited places on campus by students and staff. Here you can grab a bite to eat, buy something in the bookstore, open a bank account at Chevy Chase, play some games in the Game Room, or even get information from the information desk. There's something for everyone inside The Commons. All school clubs are based from The Commons as well as The Women's Center, which exists to help Women at UMBC, achieve their full potential.

Now I can't mention everything about UMBC in one article because the university is always changing and adding more things to write about. To see everything for yourself, take a visit out to UMBC or if you have a child that is about to graduate high school, bring them by to see what UMBC can offer them.
