What's Love Got to Do with It?

Martha Farley
What is love? And what does it have to do with anything? Love is an emotion. A very powerful one at that, when one thinks of love all kinds of images and thoughts come to mind. Movies perhaps, Casablanca, The Way We Were, Ghost, Pretty Woman, Gone with the Wind. Or maybe a song comes to mind, songs like Baby I love Your Way by Peter Frampton, All out of Love by Air Supply, Best Of My Love by the Eagles and the songs go on and on.
Perhaps other images come to mind, the sixties, Haight Ashbury, the hippies, flower power, make love not war. Without love where would we be?

" The early bond of attachment of a child to a parent or primary caregiver exerts a major influence on later relationships. It is on the foundation of this primary relationship that the conduct and expectation of all other relationships are built. " This is a quote from Friendship and Peer Relations in Children ( John Wiley & Sons 1993 )

So our early love affair with our primary caregiver will have an impact on other relationships that we form later on in life. Like the friendships of our friends, our spouse and even our own children.

Mother Teresa said " We can do no great things; only small things with great love. " Such is the power of love, it can move mountains. It can cause great men to weep and it can bring them to their knees. Love can change anything. It can change how you see the world and how the world sees you.

Love has inspired men and woman all over the world to create and to spread their wings where once perhaps they would not have had the courage to do so. Love has been sought after by great poets, singers, writers and movie directors.

Love is defined in the Webster's dictionary as : a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties, maternal for child, 2. attraction based on sexual desire;affection and tenderness felt by lovers 3; affection based on admiration, benevolence,or common interests.

Love is what makes the world go around, or so the saying goes. It is the most powerful emotion known to us. It encompasses so many diffrent realms. Yet it is so simple. Love is the one emotion that is difficult to define. In fact in some cultures there is no word for love. Therefore it can be said that love has many different meanings for many diffrent people.

What's love got to do with it? I can only conclude that love has do with anything and everything and anyone that is good and kind and joyful and hopeful and happy. It gives us strength and power and courage to continue on this journey we call " Life "!
