What's on the Mind of the Millennials?

Children of Boomers

Michele Starkey

The Millennials are defined as those who were born after 1980. The Millenials are often the children of Baby Boomers. They are the first generation to come of age in the new millennium and they are quite the opposite of any generation before them. They rely on social networking as opposed to face-to-face dialogue and oftentimes consider their technology outlets as an extension of themselves.

According to the Pew Research Center, "American teens and twenty-somethings that are making the passage into adulthood comprise the Millennials." If you have ever wondered what makes this generation so different than the past ones, consider these findings:

The Millennials are:

More ethically diverse

More racially diverse

Less religious although many do not attend church they say that they do "pray."

Less likely to serve in the military

Far more educated than past generations but current economic situations find 37% unemployed at the moment

40% sport at least one tattoo

18% have at least six or more tattoos but 70% say their tattoos are not visible under their clothing

25% have a piercing other than their ear lobe

More wary of other people and often state, "you can't be too careful"

More Millenials live at home than ever before

Although Millenials turned out in record numbers to support President Obama, many now state, "the president has failed to change the way Washington works."

The Pew website states, "This Pew Research Center report profiles the roughly 50 million Millennials who currently span the ages of 18 to 29."

If you have ever wondered what will become of America's future, we need only to look to the upcoming generations. I imagine that as more of this generation takes a foothold in our government, we'll see some dramatic changes.

It is my prayer that some of the virtues that make America a great nation will never fade away. I pray that the Millenials will realize the importance of family, compassion for neighbors and those who are in need.

I think some of that is very true.

The same things will not be important.

    Good info.

Hey, I'm 26 and basically none of this applies to me. I also know plenty of good people my age. Don't lose hope. And while I personally am not into tattoos or multiple piercings, that doesn't automatically make someone a bad person. I do think we are a lot more tolerant of other religions, cultures, and lifestyles. I hear racial slurs from older family members and it makes me want to scream.

Wow great insight into them. Still, I think I like that my kids come from Generation X.

I love how each generation gets a name.
