What's New in Music: First Week in August

From Kids Stuff to Two Glorious Debut Albums

Grant Bracken
In the world of music Black Eyed Peas are the kings and queens of the moment. They have had two singles that have decimated all other artist when it comes to keeping a top spot on the charts. Of course we all know music is more than just being popular. There are all sorts of music for all sorts of people. Every week countless new CDs gets released and most only hear what songs are played between Boom Boom Pow and the latest from Lady GaGa. There is a lot more music out there and August is filled with amazing sounds. Here is my top five list of new music coming out in the first week of August 2009.

Howl On by Bab Kennedy (Releases on August 3rd)

Bab Kennedy is a country rock artist born in Northern Ireland. Some folks might know him as the lead singer of the 80s band Energy Orchard, while others might know him from his other solo work like Lonely Street. Others might not know him at all. He has a bluesy; country sound to him that often times is quite nice. The moon landing and the summer of 1969 inspired his latest album. The two tracks I have heard from it including the title track "Howl On" are fairly solid.

Mind Control by Tantric (Releases on August 4th)
(www,myspace.com/tantric)

Compared to the other bands on my list Tantic are big shots. Mind Control is their fourth studio album. They had a number one hit in 2002 with Breakdown, but since then have been playing musical chairs in terms of band members. The line up for their forth effort only keeps the lead singer Hugo Ferreria from the original band. Still who ever is in the band at the time they tend to always put together a decent rock album, and Mind Control won't be the exception.

Felt by Anchor and Braille (Releases on August 4th)

This album is the debut for Anchor and Braille that is in fact a side project for Anberlin front man Stephen Christian. Where as Anberlin has been offering us decent alternative rock since 2002 this project has a more acoustic folk vibe to it. I have heard a few songs and they have been kind of hit or miss. The song "Sleep When We Die" is good enough reason to give this one a try.

Phineas and Ferb Soundtrack (Releases on August 4th)

I know this might be the point that most of you will think I am crazy. Those that have watched the show though know just how good the music is. Sure it's a Disney channel cartoon show that has a platypus that is also a secret agent. That does not change that the music is quirky and very catchy. I am pretty excited to be able to have the music at home. If you have no idea who Phineas and Ferb are take a half hour out of your day sometime and just check out this show. This show is one of the coolest, most bizarre things on TV today.

Evolution: Creatio Ex Hihilio by Enochian Theory (Releases on August 3rd)
www.myspace.com/enochiantheoryband

Its possible you have not heard of Enochian Theory. They are a UK band that have been slowly building a following since they formed in 2004. This will be their first major record released in the states so you can forgive yourself for not having heard their music, but after August you will have no excuse. This band plays hard rock with great skill and backs it up with smooth vocals. Not to mention there tracks often involve a certain infusion of electronic music that adds a lot to it. They are a great young band and you are going to want to be the first in your group of friends to get this CD.
