There are so many things to do at Mystery Hill, but the main attraction other than the name is the building, which seems to defy gravity. Known to some as the "Crooked Old House", but known to workers as the "Mystery House". You walk into this room thinking what is all the hype. Until you get inside you just won't know. You try to stand upright and natural and your body makes you lean forward, you can watch a ball roll uphill, water flow uphill.
What causes this "mystery"? There is an unusual north pull surrounding the area and that in turn makes the laws of physics you were taught in school not to apply in this situation. Things you know are not supposed to happen do in this building. The trip is worth it just to experience this portion of Mystery Hill.
There are so many other things to do at Mystery Hill other then the main attraction.
There is an artifact museum to explore with well over 50,000 Native American artifacts such as arrowheads, belts, bowls, pipes, and pottery. Mystery Hill can honestly say that almost every period in time for Native American history is covered in this collection.
After the Mystery House, and the Native American Museum what can you do at Mystery Hill? Well, you could explore the time period from the late 1800's into the early portion of the 1900's in the Dougherty House also known as the Heritage Museum. The house belonged to D.D. and B.B Dougherty who founded Appalachian State University. The home was originally used to further the education of mountain children and was the first house in Watauga County to have running water and electricity. If you want to take a step back in time to see what life was like during this time frame, the Heritage House is the place to do it.
Well you've pulled into Mystery Hill, you were amazed in the Mystery House, you learned about Native American culture and life in the Native American Museum, and you explored life from the late 1800's. You would think your day at Mystery Hill would be over. You would be wrong!
You will carry the day you had at Mystery Hill with you for along time to come. If you brought your children on this trip, they will most likely bring their children there as well. If you are a grandparent that took the trip when you were a child, then your grandchildren will probably do the same with their grandchildren. Mystery Hill is truly one of those locations that stays in the mountain vacation tradition of families for years and years, and not one person from your family that makes the trip will ever forget their day at Mystery Hill in Blowing Rock, NC.
