What's Next for Anthony Weiner?

Jesse Schmitt

While theantics at the Weiner-resignation press conferencewere somewhat disrespectful, so too were Anthony Weiner's actions. So yes, he did get heckled by some of the guests at the press conference, but as they say, you get what you give.

Still, as we pore over the excruciating details of this case for many more moons, the real question for Weiner is 'what's next?' It's a question for everyone who values the delivery mechanism of what comes into your sphere of influence. Paul Reuben's diddled on the X-rated movies, Arnold Schwarzenegger diddled the maid. Anthony Weiner though has come so uncomfortably close to your 6pm dinner table news discussions, that many people would just be glad to have Weiner working behind the scenes.

Unfortunately for those, there will be just as many who want Weiner front and center and that's his meat and potatoes. There was an article inMarketWatch.comthat said that Weiner is "too sleazy -- for TV." But why wouldn't Anthony Weiner have his own TV show? The obvious comparison is Eliot Spitzer. He diddled and he's got a program on CNN.

If we dig deeper we can find even more examples of train-wreck TV that so many of us watch; even in spite of ourselves we just can't turn away. Take a show like "16 & Pregnant." This show has these poor girls who get followed around and the large majority of them go through this grand catharsis after being blown off by active, young, teen boys. "16 & Pregnant" also reminds us all why we are so glad we waited until we were 19 or 20 to get pregnant.

What about a show like "The Biggest Loser" where we get to know these interminably overweight people. Then we watch as they fall off from the competition one by one until the one who has lost the most weight (by % volume) wins the competition.

There are plenty of other examples of programs ("American Idol," "The Voice") where we watch more for what we can laugh at than what we can cheer at. There are programs where real life dramatic situations are enacted in real time before the cameras eye and so many of us are all drawn to that.

So Weiner's calling card could be the perfect addition to the TV lineup. His show doesn't even have to be about news or politics. The Weiner show could be about lifestyle or online dating or cyber crime! All things which would be right up his alley.

One would hope that when Weiner said during his press conference that he was working "to heal" himself that he meant it. That he will be a good dad to his child, that he will be a good and honorable husband to his wife, and that he will leave all this noise behind him and keep his private life, private.
