What's on Your Refrigerator? Do You Use Your Refrigerator as a Wall of Fame?

You Can Tell a Lot About a Household by What is on Their Refrigerator

Kay Balbi
Ever notice things on other people's refrigerators?

One of the things that I like to do when visiting my friends and families homes is to "read" their refrigerators. You can tell a lot about a household by what they put on their refrigerator. When I go to my sister's home, she's got pictures of her family along with a calendar that is always chock full of activities and appointments for her busy family of 5. My brother's refrigerator is similar.

My mom's refrigerator had stuff on it

When we were kids, we often had pictures of people on the refrigerator and sometimes a small magnet that had an inspirational phrase or antedote my mother had been given by one of us kids as a Christmas or birthday gift. I don't remember the refrigerator at my mom's house being full - there were a few things on it, but my sisters - well hers is a masterpiece of family and good times, personal achievements and stars of accomplishments.

My grandmother's refrigerator has stuff on it too

Recently I went to my grandmother's house and noticed she has 8 flamingo's - I was able to spell HI with them and I was pretty proud of myself.

My best friend also uses her refrigerator as a menagerie of talents, achievements and comic strips. She also has a bunch of those word magnets and when you go over there, the magnets suck you in. Pretty soon I am re-arranging the magnets, hoping to surprise her with a message that hopefully she won't discover until I've gone.

Is your refrigerator bare?

There are a few homes that I've gone into that have naked refrigerators and I must say that this is somewhat alarming and almost disturbing to me. What? Nothing to read on the refrigerator...it makes me wonder, what are they trying to hide? Why don't they use this precious space to display their lists, their things to do, their things to not do, the things they have done or things that they have won?

Rejuvanating the Refrigerator Wall of Fame

It's March and I still have a thank you note displayed from Christmas. I also have a band flyer up there to remind me to tell people about an upcoming gig my band had a month ago. I put it up there to remind me to tell people about our gig. Now it serves as a reminder to book the band again. We have our dentist appointment cards on there, and the recycling schedule.

Impact of Refrigerator Magnets

According to Wikipedia, Refrigerator Magnets "are an iconic piece of America. More than 80% of all households in developed nations have magnets on their fridge, for both utility and purely decorative purposes. A refrigerator magnet's lifespan is typically between 5-10 years. Did you know that the number of times a refrigerator door is viewed in an average household per day is about 40? That means that each magnet makes approximately 14,600 impressions per household." (Wiki)

Fridge Fact

Refrigerators Com says, "Most people have a refrigerator magnet or two. Louise J. Greenfarb of Henderson, Nevada, has over 32,000 different refrigerator magnets. She is appropriately known as "The Magnet Lady." Her collection was declared the world's largest by the Guinness Book of World Records. Over 7,000 of her magnets can be seen at the Guinness Museum in Las Vegas." Refrigerators.com

I liked your article. I don't have anything on my refrigerator. Should I? I'm questioning it now.
