What's so Common About Sense?

A.M. Morgan
Everything should be relatively easy because common sense should tell you how to make the best decisions. Well things are not that simple when lack of education, expertise or experience leads you elsewhere. Graduate from college, get a good job, become a high achiever and this will guarantee you a promotion but as in everything there are exceptions to the norm.

There are also efficient ways to navigate through your career but what if you haven't discovered them yet. Success is measured by the quality of the things you produce but often there is a struggle before the glory of achieving quantifiable results. Teamwork is a vital element in collectively making a difference, but often there is still a team member who doesn't understand there is no I in team.

This is the reality of the Real World that no particular college course may have prepared you for. I spent the first five years after college just doing my job and not knowing the indicators of when to plan a career move or how to ask the right questions. You may ask did I not have the common sense to know that I needed to take control in seeking my own destiny. Well I would say I had become unconsciously competent comfortable doing the day to day tasks in the same job.

I now ponder a lingering question because I often hear that I should have known better, "What's so common about sense?"

I agree with you -- common sense is not "common"...but if you're going to post a blog about the English language...try to use it correctly. Your use of grammar and punctuation definitely left me desiring more.

It's not so common, trust me! I was in the military. The less you have(or admit to have)the easier it is.

Great post! I often wondered why it was called common sense. Since so many people don't good grasp of common sense shouldn't it be called uncommon sense or extraordinary sense?
