Wheelchair Chronicles: Three Months and Many Bruises Later

Genie Walker
It's been three months since my power wheelchair arrived at my home and my driving skills have improved greatly. I'm a speed demon on sidewalks and well I confess I don't slow down much inside either unless there is a lot of traffic. I am coming home with fewer bruises than I did in the beginning because I am finally learning what not to do so I don't run into walls and doors. There is one thing that still catches me off guard though.

My wheelchair has a joystick that lets me control the speed and direction. It also lets my coat drive for awhile when I lean over to pick something up or reach up to get something. If that didn't make sense let me clarify; without me realizing it my coat hangs on the joystick and when I move it drives the wheelchair instead of letting me sit still as I intended.

So far I have been smacked into my car, the library's bookshelves, and my desk at work so hard that I look like I have been abused. I have bruises from my knees down from the first two and bruises all on my stomach from the desk. I have bruises from the knees up from taking the wheelchair on and off the wheelchair lift on my car. Then there is the one time I ran over my foot with my own wheelchair.

Other than that I'm getting along great with my wheelchair. It truly has been a blessing. I am finally feeling less exhausted and not missing so much work. The best blessing is that I am able to get around more. I am not limited to shopping in stores with motorized scooters available for their customers. I can go anywhere provided I can get to the door and get it open. I am also going to the local parks on beautiful days and I have the slideshows to prove it along with several videos I have submitted.

I have run over one friend's toes, but I believe it was his fault not mine. If someone is standing close to me, I can not see through my leg and the chair to know where their feet are placed. I told my friend three times that I am moving to the other room. He said okay three times, so I thought he was smart enough to get his feet out of the way of my wheels. He wasn't. Do you agree with me? If you do then I will still have a clean driving record.
