It would be no different if I decided that my life would be better in Italy. If I'm going to live and work in Italy where most of the population speaks Italian, then what should I do? I should learn Italian.
I can't believe it when someone of a different nationality who doesn't speak English gets mad at me because I don't understand them. Once a woman came to apply for a position at the restaurant where I work and she was yelling at me in her language because I couldn't understand what she wanted to do. Do you believe that? I'm in America and she was yelling at me because I don't speak her language.
Some may say that I'm being insensitive or maybe even that I'm discriminating but I don't see how. I have nothing against the individual in question, I only have a problem when I'm blamed for not being able to understand a language foreign to the country that I live in. What would you say if I lived in China but I didn't speak Chinese? If a Chinese man got upset with me because I couldn't understand what he wanted to buy, who's at fault? In this situation, I am because I'm in China so I should learn Chinese! If you live in America, learn English!
It's not racism and it's not a problem with people coming from other countries taking jobs. Some people feel that is a problem but I think that you have a right to any job that you are qualified for and shouldn't matter what race you are or what country you come from. I'm afraid that it should matter if you are incapable of communicating effectively with the people that you find yourself dealing with. It should matter in America just as it should matter in Japan, China, Spain, Mexico, Africa, or wherever you go. Language matters if you want to make a decent living no matter where you live because people want to be able to understand you in their native habitat and in their language. It's that simple
