When is the Best Time to Go to a Gym?

Aaron Tadeo
One of the most common dilemmas when you're a member of a gym or a fitness club is time management. A lot of us have work, some run errands and some go to school. However, there are some of us who really prefer to go to a gym at a specific time of the day or the week. These are the times when we usually have free time. But of course, most of us would want to go there when there are few people. Let me share some of my experience on how I choose when to go to a gym.

One of the things that I have observed is that people usually go to the gym either before or after work because this is the time when most of them are free. The dilemma here is the availability of equipment. Not all gyms have enough equipment when packed with people especially in the free weights section where there is a selection of different weights for dumbbells.

The good thing is that I can go either during the middle of the day or closing time. These are the times when there are a small number of people at the gym. It may also depend on your neighborhood and the location.

One concern that I have when it comes to working out at a public gym is hygiene. Some people are quite inconsiderate and do not clean the equipment after they use it. Sweat and other bodily fluids, even blood, could be left on the machines and other equipments. The more people there are, the higher the probability is that the machine you are about to use is not clean. Good thing there are gyms out there that provide cleaning materials so that you can clean the equipment before using them. Aside from simply being dirty, there may be diseases that can be caught from it.

Holidays can be a very good time to work out especially if you have nothing else to do that day. A lot of people are usually on vacation and can't come to the gym and so far, I have observed that throughout a holiday, the volume of people isn't that high.

You can also base it on the gym's operating hours. If it is in a mall or in a commercial center, it usually opens and closes along with the establishment. The gym that I go to is in a mall and closes a bit past the mall operating hours and at that time; there are very few people at the gym. The same thing goes when the gym opens. There are only a handful of people there. It is possible though that there may be few attendants to help you out at those times.

In my case, I'm working for a company in a 24/7 industry so I have to strategically allocate time for my visit to the gym and as much as possible I choose early in the morning or late at night. I can even run around if I wanted to. But it all comes to your preference and availability and most importantly, your time management skills.
