When Business is Slow

So you run your own business or you call yourself a freelancer, which technically means you work for yourself, but perhaps you just haven't started your business yet. Either way, you've already accomplished a goal many only dream of, you're working for yourself. The main ingredient needed in a person that is a freelancer or business owner is self-motivation, creating your own deadlines and goals. When business is booming and your busy, getting motivated is pretty easy, but what about the slow times?

Every freelancer or business owner knows that work comes in seasons. Sometimes you'll have so much to do and so many people to please you feel like your head is spinning and sometimes the phone doesn't ring and no emails come in for what can feel like eternity when you're fretting about your bills. So, here's the goal, continue running and growing your business in the slow times. Take advantage of the downtime to revamp, reorganize and evolve your business. Get motivated to get ahead, view the slow time as opportunity to get better.

Here are five suggestions to get you started, however, every business is unique and every business owner has their own unique priorities, so brainstorm what will be the most beneficial activities for yourself and for your business.

1. Learn something new. Take the time to educate yourself on the newest advances in your business field. Maybe a new program is out or new technology, if you're really into learning, go to a local bookstore and scan the aisles for a book on a subject in your business field you don't know much about.

2. Get organized. Business runs more smoothly when files and inventory are in order. Everybody has their own definition of organization and their own system that works best for them. Just make sure your system is actually working for you and not against you.

3. Stay connected. Spend some time on social applications like Twitter and Facebook. If you don't have these applications set up for your business already, take the time on your slow day to get a business page started. You might be surprised at how well this new technology works to get you connected with potential clients and help you keep up with old ones.

4. Catch up on finances. Slow time is perfect to go through your budget and make sure your caught up on all of your payments.

5. Get the word out. What better time to spark interest in your business and get yourself some work? Find ways to market your business, go to a meeting or conference, revamp your website or start a new one. Figure out what kind of marketing works best for your business and get started!

Don't forget to take some time out to have fun too. Although it's great to get ahead and keep yourself working, the most important part of your life is the people in it, not your business. Go for a walk with a friend or spend some time with your family. All work and no play, well you know the saying! Enjoy your slow time!
