When You Have to Change Your Gynecologist

Most women will tell you the relationship between a patient and a gynecologist is one that is unique and just a little bit weird. This is one of the reasons women find the need to find a gynecologist with whom they feel comfortable be they male or female. It is great when you finally find the gynecologist with whom you can establish rapport and feel comfortable. But what happens if you have to relocate because of your job or your partner or spouses job?

When you have to change your gynecologist there are a few steps you can take to ensure the transition is smooth and seamless. If you are relocating to a different city ask your current Gynecologist for a referral. Generally once you mention to your physician that you are relocating they will offer a referral or have someone in their office do a little research to provide you with a short list of top Gynecologist in the area in which you are moving.

All doctor's offices operate differently but it would not hurt to see if your Gynecologist will allow you to take your records with you or to correspond with the new Gynecologist you will be using to provide him or her with a bit of background information on your health and history.

When you have to change your gynecologist it is not always because of a move. In some cases they may have passed on or moved out of the area or even retired. Ask for local referrals or consider one of the partners in the office if the office is set up as such. No matter the reason required to change your Gynecologist, this is the one medical relationship that is ultra sensitive and it is imperative that you are comfortable. Once you have decided on a new Gynecologist ask questions until you have the answers you want and by all means be sure that you are comfortable with the new physician and the new environment. You have a choice in whom you decide provides you with medical services and your comfort and care are paramount to your well being.
