When a Child Blushes

Just a Clip Out of My Life when I Embarrased My Son John

We have all heard the saying, "Kids do the darnedest things." It is a rare and special occasion when a parent does the darnedest things." I have a story that will forever haunt my nine year-old son John, courtesy of dear old mom.

Being a stay at home mom, I live for the times when I can get together with other parents and socialize. One particular occasion I did so was at my son's former elementary schools. It was "meet the teacher" day, and my first initial visit with his 3rd grade teacher. All the moms were to bring a cake, or cookies, or some type of confectionary so we all can share in the meet and greet with all the other parents.

That same night, I had a bridal shower to go to. I made two cakes that afternoon; one for the teacher-parent night meeting, and one for the bridal shower. Both cakes were in the same kind of cake box. The bridal shower cake was kind of risqué, with bikini underwear created from pink and red clear gel frosting on top, so in the hurry to get to John's class, I grabbed the wrong pink box.

When the time came to eat the snacks we brought, I was on my best behavior, and having a great time getting to know the other parents. When I opened the box, half of the parents two being dads, looked in and looked at each other. One of the dads said, "Wow John, you have the coolest mom ever!" I was still in my fog of conversation, and said ah, thank you. The guys started laughing, closed the box, and said, you might want to look at the cake you brought...Yes, you guessed it, it was the wrong one. The parents had a huge laugh about it, however, John just sat in the corner and shook his head.

After that, John did not privy me to the date of any more school functions. I am now making cakes for the cake raffles every month for the new school he attends, but I promised him I would check them before entered in the raffle.
