When Christmas Isn't so Merry

Getting Through Christmas when it Isn't the Happiest Holiday

Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration but what happens when it's not so merry? It can cause much heartbreak and even irritation when Christmas which is supposed to be a time that miracles become more frequent seems to be miracle free. There are decorations lighting every house and street corner yet your home is bear and free from all signs of this joyous holiday. There are no presents under the tree and you aren't sure if there will be; you have given up hope of them being there.

The reasons that Christmas is not merry for all are numerous and most of them are very private reasons. Some are alone during this time of family togetherness and have no one to share the joy with which makes feeling the joy and merriment of the season virtually impossible for them to do. Financial struggles that leave parents without the ability to provide even the smallest gift to their children that aren't yet old enough to understand or even to give them a decent meal on this day can take away from the feelings of being merry.

As people go through their lives each day and begin to prepare for the festivities that are taking place in their own home they sometimes forget that others are not as fortunate as themselves. They wonder why there are people that seem to be depressed during the Christmas season; they never think that maybe those depressed people have lost their home or even a loved one making this Christmas anything but merry for them. There are those that can not be happy during the Christmas season no matter what they manage to achieve and even well intentioned attempts at trying to get them into the holiday spirit make it worse for them.

When Christmas isn't merry there is nothing that can be done to force someone into the generous spirit and joyous mood the season is supposed to bring. There are even situations when trying to spread the joy will cause Christmas to be even less merry than before. Letting them know they are welcome to spend the holiday with you can sometimes be enough. Anonymous gifts for children left on the porch and the makings of dinner being delivered can sometimes help to get them back in the spirit of Christmas.

There are those that believe Christmas will never be merry as long as they are not able to spend it with those they love the most. Christmas being seen through the eyes of a child can help to make the season merry again. You have to be open to seeing everything as if it's for the first time and go back to when magic could be found in anything.
