When to Be Concerned About Diarrhea

Jennifer Kirkman
Diarrhea is often combined with the flu, and in that case, it has to run its own course until it is done. The flu symptoms other than diarrhea are vomiting, nausea, cramping, and low-grade fever with chills. The best thing to do in this case is to eat very carefully, a liquid diet in small sips all day and try to stay hydrated. Dehydration is exactly what a person with vomiting and diarrhea wants to avoid. Therefore it is important to not take in any solid food until these symptoms pass.

Diarrhea in a few cases, however, can be dangerous. Let me point out some things to watch for in your symptoms. The general rule of thumb on diarrhea, is that if it is lasting for longer then 3 days, you need to seek your healthcare provider's help.

One of the most dangerous causes of diarrhea is food poisoning. Food poisoning can often occur from eating bad meat, fish undercooked, and not being clean enough when cooking. One of the first signs of food poisoning is diarrhea, followed by nausea and vomiting, a tingling feeling in the hands and feet, and a terrible body weakness which could actually lead to cessation of breathing or passing out.

If these are your symptoms along with diarrhea, it is important to seek immediate medical care. With proper medical care depending upon the toxin you digested, people recover well.

Another cause for ongoing problems with diarrhea is colitis. Colitis is a condition that causes you to have swelling issues of your large intestine. One specific type of colitis that causes a lot of abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea is Crohn's Disease. Crohn's Disease can even cause bloody diarrhea, upset stomach with vomiting, anal sores, and no appetite.

Crohn's Disease is often treated with diet changes, and corticosteroid drugs to help both the inflammation process and swelling.

Another medical problem similar to Crohn's Disease is known as IBS, which is irritable bowel syndrome. This condition can cause both bouts of constipation alternating with diarrhea. Other symptoms of IBS is also gas, a feeling of being bloated, a lot of stomach cramps, and overall unwell feeling.

This condition is also treated with lifestyle changes such as diet. The diet will have to eliminate any food that can cause a lot of gas and trigger an attack of IBS. Taking over the counter medicines to relieve diarrhea should also help most people.

If you are concerned about any of these conditions here, you must talk to your healthcare provider for medical advice.
