When Did Respect for the President Stop?

S. E. Masters
It stopped when Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States. Sure, past presidents have been criticized, heckled, impeached, assassinated, and the butt of many jokes. But this president has been down right disrespected by his colleagues, right-wing personalities, the public, and the certain media outlets.

It was bad enough when South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson called Obama a liar during major speech on health care. Then later called it "a lack of civility." He wouldn't have done that to Bush, Clinton, Reagan or even Nixon. The lack of respect is reserved exclusively for this president. It has been a free-for-all.

Today, Bill O'Reilly interviewed the president before the Super Bowl game. It was a boring interview, as expected, The predictable O'Reilly swung the whip by asking the commander-in-chief how he felt that so many people hate him. And he repeated "they hate you." That was of course a strategic move knowing that the largest television audience of the year was watching. Watching at parties, bars and other social gatherings, and listening on the radio. Inciting hatred.

Hate is probably the strongest word in the English language. It's use by rational people, clearly describes intentions of the heart. Well, for those who attempt to belittle this president because of race, hopefully they will live long enough to be condemned by a president that looks just like them. And it shall happen.

Been a bit busy lately, but I am happy to leave my comment on this still timely article relating to the disparity of how President Obama is viewed by a majority of people who will never stand by this man no matter what he does. Fantastic Article, direct and to the point.

Thanks for your comments Snidely. Let's just say that Obama was the Dudley Doright saving American families by committing to ending senseless wars. But the article wasn't about health care, it was addressing respect for the Office of the President of the United States. No president, past, present or future will be perfect. Nor will your or I. But with all of the corruption of the Bush Administration, Clinton, Bush, Sr., and Reagan, if there was any disrespect or "talk", it was done in the inner circles, not publicly. If you don't like the man, respect the office.

Mr. Obama earned the public's distrust and dislike. Regardless of one's politics, it's clear Obamacare was unwanted, yet forced upon us. The incessant string of Czars and regulations to circumvent a Congress that will not give him what he wants adds to the numbers that really distrust him. Add in his clear ignoring of Federal court rulings in the Gulf drilling moratorium and Obamacare and we can pretty easily see why Mr. Obama is not our favorite. Do ya know the administration has been declared in contempt of court for its refusal to issue Gulf drilling permits? It has ya know. Sorry if we will not like a president who the courts think is in contempt of the law.
