When is Earth Hour 2011?

Earth Hour is a beautifully simple way to show you care about this planet. For one hour people the world over are encouraged to turn off and unplug all nonessential eletrical devices and turn off the lights to lessen our footprint on Earth. This initiative began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and quickly grew as city after city adopted it.

Earth Hour 2010, on Saturday March 27, was the biggest yet. One hundred twenty-eight countries and territories joined in. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off and individual people from all walks of life also did. This has been shown to lessen the "human footprint" significantly enough that more and more are turning off for the one hour a year. It has also been said that this creates a lovely spectacle for the astronauts in space as the strip of dark goes around the world like a wave in a sports stadium.

This year Earth Hour will be Saturday March 26 at 8:30 PM your local time.

earthhour.org is encouraging people to go beyond the hour this year by applying the spirit of Earth Hour to their lives even after they turn the lights back on.
