When an Eye is Infected with Herpes Simplex Virus

Seek Treatment!

Dan Reveal
"Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2...are two members of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, that infect humans."

That's a simple enough way to define a familiar condition like herpes simplex virus, an infection typically found in the mouth, lips, and genitals.

When an eye is infected with herpes simplex virus, contrastingly, it is thought to be a rather rare occurrence and is the start of a series of experiences that can only be described as unpleasant.

Wrong Diagnosis

Because it is more rare for an eye to be infected with herpes simplex virus, it is not uncommon for the condition to be diagnosed in the wrong way.

For example, even though the eye appears red with the viral infection of herpes simplex, this redness can be mistaken for the condition of Conjunctivitis, commonly known as "Pink Eye."

"Conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids)."

Since the physician is typically looking for the herpes virus around the lips, for example, pink eye quite understandably becomes the wrong diagnosis.

Symptoms

When an eye is infected with herpes simplex virus, the results can be very painful. It's like the virus melts a section of the cornea and the person feels this burning sensation quite dramatically.

This condition can actually lead to blindness if it goes untreated.

One thing to remember is that the eyes dilate together. Therefore, if the virus is in the left eye and a left eye patch is present, there will still be a painful sensation as the right eye adjusts to light.

Treatment

Fortunately, treatment is available when an eye is infected with herpes simplex virus.

Stoxil, which is a "trademark for an antiviral (idoxuridine)." Stoxil comes as eye drops which are used for at least a few days before the symptoms subside.

Because herpes is a virus, it is only natural to prescribe an antiviral like Stoxil.

It is important to realize that herpes simplex virus is never cured. The virus can begin to show itself again and the person is advised to seek treatment immediately.

In sum, herpes simplex virus is usually associated with the mouth, lips, and genitals. When an eye is infected with herpes simplex virus, the condition can be diagnosed in the wrong way.

It is always important to seek help for this painful condition because it can lead to blindness.
