When Harry Met Lee on American Idol

The songs of Frank Sinatra, the original American Idol, were featured on Tuesday night's show. The contestants were mentored this week by singer, musician and stage and screen actor, Harry Connick Jr. Harry said the biggest challenge they all faced was making these classic songs sound contemporary and making them sound like their own. Harry, also an accomplished songwriter, arranged all of the songs for tonight's performances and accompanied the contestants on stage. Frank's daughters, Tina and Nancy, were in the audience to listen to the top five perform some of their father's most famous tunes.

Frank's songs proved to be a challenge for most of the contestants who were still just young children when he died in 1998. The songs were especially difficult for contemporary rockers Casey James and Crystal Bowersox. The Sinatra songbook seemed to be a better fit for Michael Lynche and Lee DeWyze. After three mediocre performances, Michael Lynche delivered a solid performance. But, they saved the best for last. Lee DeWyze brought down the house with his performance of "That's Life."

When mentoring Lee, Harry called him a new and improved version of himself. Dressed in black suit with his shirt untucked Sinatra style, Lee started off the performance next to Harry on the organ and then owned the stage for the remainder of the performance. Randy said, "Another great arrangement. You stayed your rocker self and I loved it." Ellen said, "If tonight were the last night, you would have won the whole thing." Kara said, "Do you think you can win? Do you really think you can win? Go home and write I can win this thing 100 times. All you need is confidence. You can win." Simon said, "Harry brought out your personality and confidence. You gave it 110%. By far, for all of us, this was the best performance of the night." Based on tonight's performance, Lee is definitely in it to win it.

Tune it tomorrow night at 9 p.m. EST for the live results show.
