When Harry Met Sally - a Review

When Harry Met Sally was released in July of 1989. It stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, which may at first sound like an odd combination- but that's why it works. It also has Carrie Fisher in it as Sally's best friend, which made me smile as a Star Wars fan. It won and was nominated for awards in acting, directing, and for the screenplay.

The screenplay really is where this movie shines. It constantly shines with wit and truths that people tend to not think about. It's incredibly quotable, also. The movie starts with Harry and Sally immediately after graduating from college. They drive from Chicago to New York together. They lose touch, and find each other again, a couple more times. While the movie clearly follows the romantic comedy formula, it works! It's mostly due to the dialog between Harry and Sally. I've written an entire article full of my top 10 quotes from the movie, including: "Right now everything is great, everyone is happy, everyone is in love and that is wonderful. But you gotta know that sooner or later you're gonna be screaming at each other about who's gonna get this dish. This eight dollar dish will cost you a thousand dollars in phone calls to the legal firm of That's Mine, This Is Yours." Harry says this to friends who've just gotten married, when he's still dealing with his divorce. Sally calms him down afterward, but it's an interesting scene in the movie. They have some conversations that are completely random, and could be conversations that anyone has in everyday life. The movie deals with everyday things like divorce, friendship, marriage, blind dates, dating, sex, everything that can come up between men and women.

This movie is a great date movie. It's enjoyable by both men and women, I think, even though it's categorized as a romantic comedy.
