"When Harry Met Sally": We'll Have What They're Having

If there's nothing else you take away from "When Harry Met Sally," it's that love can start as, and be a deeper form, of friendship.
Oh, and women fake it and make others want their salad...

Released in 1989, "When Harry Met Sally" stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as the title characters who meet on a cross country trip as strangers to start life in New York after college, Harry sharing his unique views on life (reading the end of books first in case he dies before he finishes it, stating that you just can't have great sex with someone named Sheldon, etc.), which are the photo negatives of Sally's sunny views on, well, everything. They part when Harry states that men and women can't be friends, because the pressure of sex is always there.

Years later, they encounter again, and, again, Harry has more nuggets of doom and gloom for Sally, and she wastes no time ditching him yet again. Finally, the inevitable happens when Harry's predictions of sadness come true with a divorce and Sally loses a longtime boyfriend over his commitment issues, and they, against Harry's former advice, do become friends.

They help each other through rough times: The dive back into the dating pool after the loss of love, Harry meeting ex-wife Helen's new husband (while singing "Surrey With A Fringe On Top" in front of him in a Sharper Image store), and the revelation to Harry that, yes, sometimes women put on the grand act in the bedroom to protect the mighty (read: fragile) male ego (here's where to look for director Rob Reiner's mother, after Sally puts on the Big O Show for Harry, telling the waiter, "I'll have what she's having.").

And, then, of course, there's "the moment" in "When Harry Met Sally," and everything goes awry between the two close friends. Interspersed in the movie are elderly couples telling their love stories, funny, poignant, strange, and long-lasting.

This is one of the better movies of the 1980's, with a sparkling cast supported by the late Bruno Kirby and a pitch perfect Carrie Fisher as Harry and Sally's best friends who start their own romance after years of their own disappointments.

And here's the best news: it's now available on DVD, and here's where you can find it for yourself:

  • One of the finest romantic comedies of the '80's, with great performances by Crystal and Ryan
  • As well as one of the funniest one-liners ever: "I'll have what she's having."
  • In turns funny, poignant, and touching, this movie has a little something for everyone.
The woman who delivered that famous line after Sally puts on the Big O act to prove her point to Harry was none other that director Rob Reiner's elderly mother.
