When to Use Hospice Care

Hospice is an organization that helps terminally ill patients and their families cope with end of life situations. Care workers help make the patient more comfortable in the last days of his/her life. Hospice also offers families support in coping with the illness. The organization does not attempt to change the course of the illness. It attempts to improve the quality of life for the terminally ill.

When to use hospice care:

Preparation: Hospice helps families prepare for the journey of terminally ill patients. Pre-planning is important to achieving the best results with the use of hospice. Contact hospice care when diagnosed with a terminal illness. They will help the patient and family members deal with every aspect when the patient will not survive much longer. From counseling to help in finding financial aid, hospice will walk the family through.

Decision-Making: Many important decisions have to be made when someone finds out they have a terminal illness. Hospice care can help the patient and family through the sometimes-murky waters. Hospice cares about the patient and family. They do not try to sway the opinions of the patient in anyway. They listen and give good information about what options are available for end of life decisions.

Final Hours: Hospice is most helpful in the final hours of a patient's life. There could be days left before the patient will pass away. Hospice is very good about understanding the signs that the patient will pass away soon. That is when hospice care is in full swing. Use hospice during this time more than any other. Care workers will come in and keep the patient bathed, shaved and anything else that will help keep the patient comfortable. They will change sheets, talk the family through the events to ease their minds and be open and honest about what is occurring. In short, they take the fear out of dying for both the patient and his/her family members.

Hospice is a wonderful service for terminally ill patients. The care providers are gentle, kind and caring about the patients and family members. They understand the emotions associated with such illnesses. They assure that the patient is able to die with dignity and in the most comfortable atmosphere possible. Hospice care seems to give hope in an otherwise hopeless situation. The hope is that death is not as scary as we think it is. They cannot take away the pain, but they can make it easier to deal with.
