When Hot Water is Not Included and Other Unexpected Vacation Snafus and What to Do About Them

Gerald McLeod
Life's great vacation journey's, though often much needed escapes, sometimes possess there own mysteries and unexpected events. Here are a couple travel tips to help you over come some of those unexpected bumps.

Vacation Wash Solution - A great way to pack powered detergent to take it along on vacation with you to perform those once in a while but necessary in-hotel-room sink clothes washing emergencies is to place it in one of those plastic spice containers, the kind with the removable shaker cap under its lid and take it with you. Once you have used the contents and it is empty, remove the container's lid and shaker cap and rinse it thoroughly. Dry it well. Fill it with powered detergent. Pack it in your suitcase. When you need it for an emergency wash need, take it out and sprinkle detergent in the sink as needed. Washing solution solved without having to purchase a package of laundry detergent that contains far more detergent then you may need for the small job you want to get done.

Protect Your Vacation Film from Damaging Airport X-rays - Everyone has not transitioned to digital camera use with their removable media storage disk to preserve their vacation memory in photos. Some of us still use photographic film. Unfortunately, the x-ray equipment at the airport can damage that film and render the images it contains undevelopable. To reduce the likelihood of this occurring to your vacation memories, use prepaid mail order film processing envelopes. There are a number of mail-order film processors that provide prepaid film processing envelopes which you can take on vacation with you. As you finish a roll of film, pop the exposed roll into the prepaid film processing envelope and mail it off to the film processing company from where ever your are. When you arrive home at the end of your vacation, your pictures will be there waiting for your to enjoy.

In-Room Roll-on Foot Relief - A day of vacation sightseeing and shopping can result in a pair of tired and sometimes sore feet. A trick my wife uses to relax and rejuvenate her feet in these situations is to save a roll-on deodorant container once she has used up the contents, clean it well, and pack it in her travel bag. If after a day of being on the go on her feet produces foot distress, she retrieves her roll-on bottle, sit on the side of the tub in the bathroom, run a comfortable temperature water from the faucet and use the roll-on applicator to roll on the bottom of her feed as the water runs over them. In no time she is refreshed. She says it produces wonderful reflexology affects.

Quick Ocean Cruise Nausea Relief - I learned this nausea relief trick from a cruise line deck hand on my first cruise vacation and it has worked on the numerous cruise vacations I have taken since. When you begin to feel nauseated while on board, peel an orange, hold the orange peel up to your nose, rind side against your nostrils and inhale until the nausea passes.

When Hot Water is Not Included - Some rustic tropical vacation destinations do not always provide hot water as one of the amenities in your lodging. This means you must endure cold showers and baths. Most times the small communities depend on water towers or outdoor storage tanks to provide water pressure and water for cooking and bathing. These water towers and outdoor storage tanks sit in the hot tropical sun all morning. The heat from the sun raises the temperature of the water. Usually by mid day, the water has reached a fairly comfortable temperature which makes showering and bathing comfortable. If you wait to shower between mid day and early afternoon, you should be able to avoid the shock of a cold shower.

While on vacation, there is something you can not plan for or control, like the weather for instance, however, with a little planning and foresight, even the most unexpected occurrence can be turned in to an added adventure. Learn to adapt and enjoy the little inconveniences that sometimes occur while you are on vacation. It will make the trip much more enjoyable.
