A lemon is basically a car that just continues to have problems. It is never fixed completely and every time you turn around, you find something else wrong with it. Lemons can be extremely expensive if you don't realize fast enough that the car is simply a bottomless money pit.
The idea of a lemon law is to protect consumers from shady car dealers and also from manufacturer defects. Usually, the law gives you a way to recuperate your money or replace the vehicle. In some cases, it covers free repairs, but the laws change from state to state, so you will need to check yours.
Which vehicles are covered is also stated n the lemon law. For example, in one state motor homes might be covered by the law, while in others motorcycles and motor homes are excluded. This is very important information if you don't have just a regular car or truck. You will need to check and see if the lemon law in your state is relevant to your vehicle.
The best way to buy a car is to be careful. You don't want to have to use the lemon law! It is there as a backup measure only, so when you are considering buying a car, have a trusted mechanic look it over first. Trust your instincts, too. If the salesperson seems shady, walk away.
If you do end up with a bad car, you need to seriously evaluate whether or not it is a lemon. Does it have a few problems, or a lot of reappearing ones? Were you informed of or aware of the problems ahead of time? You might not be able to use the lemon law if you were first informed of the mechanical problems your car is experiencing.
Should you decide that your vehicle is indeed a lemon, you will need to take a look at the lemon law for your area. These can be found online, just do a Google search with the words "lemon law" and your state, it will give you the information that you need.
Getting stuck with a bad car is no fun, but that is why we have lemon laws, to help us out when we accidentally pick a lemon.
