In an email sent out to supporters October 20, 2010 with the subject line "Lately, I've had it up to here," Biden tried to sound as frustrated as the average American is right now. Of course, he failed to realize that America is frustrated at the job he and President Obama are doing. Instead, he tried to direct his anger towards Republicans.
In the email, Biden relies on the old Democratic tactic of saying Republicans are giving tax breaks to the rich and ruining the country in the process. Never mind that Democrats currently support extending tax breaks for the rich in order to stimulate the economy, but Biden doesn't exactly have a lot of friends in Washington right now. "Remember when the GOP was in control? They drove up record deficits to pass tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class," he says in the email. "And now they want to do it again. If they take over Congress, Republicans have promised to go back to the "exact same agenda" that drove our economy into a ditch. You can't make this stuff up. The exact same agenda."
Biden then employs the Obama "I'm looking for an ass to kick" tactic, in an effort to give the appearance of leadership. "I'm going to do everything I can to make sure they don't get the chance. We have a plan in place and 13 days to get it done -- but each and every one of us needs to do what we can today."
Biden then asks for a $3 donation "to help us keep them out of power." He then attacks several Republican candidates, all in hotly contested races where high profile Democrats are in trouble. "Folks like Sharron Angle in Nevada, Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, and Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania want to go beyond the failed policies of the past. Backed by millions in special interest money, some Republicans want to cut the minimum wage, gut Social Security, and end Medicare as we know it."
Biden then attempts to highlight the efforts of the President, who he refers to only as Barack. That includes the controversial health insurance and student loan reform. He then echoes the mantra that got him elected in 2008. "That's the change we can all believe in....Barack and I are going to keep fighting for that America -- and right now, you get to decide how this fight plays out. Donate $3 or more today and help us finish strong." The email then directs readers to a donation page on Barack Obama's website.
Even with the economy in decline and average Americans struggling, Biden points out the two things that matter to him most: money and staying in power.
