The original plans for the visitor's center did not include the use of the motto, which opened in December of 2008. In response to criticism of the oversight, both the House and the Senate passed resolutions in July 2009 to have both "In God We Trust" and the Pledge of Allegiance engraved at the visitor center entrance.
Soon after, the Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a lawsuit claiming it was unconstitutional for taxpayers to pay for the engraving of "In God We Trust," even though it has been the nation's motto since 1956. The Capitol Visitor Center inaccurately stated that the nation's motto was "E Pluribus Unum."
The lawsuit was dismissed, and the Visitor Center, at the direction of Congress, added "In God We Trust" to the center's entrance in September 2009.

Post a CommentY'know 1956 isn't THAT long ago. People talk about "In God We Trust" being in the Pledge since then like it's a long-standing tradition. Riddle me this Batman: if "in God we trust" why do we have a standing army?
Good news. Good article, Victor.
