Behar and fellow co-host Whoopi Goldberg were ready when O'Reilly showed up for his most recent interview. They began questioning O'Reilly on the Ground Zero mosque and his opposition to it. When asked about his reasoning, O'Reilly dared to speak the truth: the mosque is insulting because Muslims were responsible for the deaths of 9/11.
Even though Goldberg and Behar were fully aware of O'Reilly's stance, his response shouldn't have been a shock to the two. Rather than attempt to argue the point reasonably, however, Goldberg and Behar acted like two divas and, in a fit of theatrics, stormed off the set. Later, on her Headline News talk show, Behar called O'Reilly's comments "hate speech." While she was offended over the idea that Muslims were responsible for 9/11, she then took the stance that the government may be behind 9/11, a belief of many 9/11 "truthers" like her friend Rosie O'Donnell.
Despite what some might think, their response was hardly a spontaneous reaction. Obviously, the two were trying to portray O'Reilly's position as so radical that no one would even dare to hear it spoken. Whether O'Reilly is right or not is not the issue here; what should concern us all is the idea that civil debate is no longer welcome in the public arena.
Goldberg and Behar were not interested in trying to argue the intellectual points of O'Reilly's argument or be the voice of reason. If they had, they would have lost, because no matter how politically incorrect it is, O'Reilly's statement is correct. It isn't a blanket condemnation of all Muslims as some would claim, but just the way it is.
What the two were trying to do, by feigning offense, was marginalizing anyone who attempts to use O'Reilly's line of reasoning or take his stance. Liberals don't need to prove their point when they can discredit whoever opposes them.
Of course, criticizing Islam may be highly offensive to Goldberg and Behar, but they fail to hold themselves to such standard when it comes to other religions. What O'Reilly said about Islam is nothing compared to the inflammatory statements and gross generalizations Goldberg and Behar have made about Christianity.
Behar once stated on "The View" that people in the Bible who heard the voice of God had a mental illness. On June 22, 2010, she said prayer "takes the place of logical thinking," then got offended when Elizabeth Hasselbeck challenged her on it.
In 2008, Goldberg led protests at a Mormon church in New York city over their support of Proposition 8. She told John McCain that same year that his pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate meant Christianity could "take over" America and deprive others of their religious rights.
By running away from Bill O'Reilly rather than engage him, Goldberg and Behar actually proved his point. It's hard to argue with the truth.
