You would think Microsoft is too busy making money to bother with such trivial things like banning free speech, but you would be wrong. Ever ready to maintain their street cred in the liberal mecca of Seattle where they are headquartered, Microsoft's PC police has decided the word "gay" is now a slur. Just ask Josh Moore, a resident of Fort Gay, an actual town of 800 in Virginia.
Moore registered his account and filled out a personal profile with Microsoft so he could play online games on his Xbox 360 using the Xbox Live online network. Soon after registering, however, someone took offense when they read what city he lived in and reported him to Microsoft. As a result, he was banned from Xbox Live for using inappropriate language.
During his attempts to lift his ban, Moore was repeatedly told the word "gay' was offensive. According to Moore, Microsoft staff would not even say the word "gay" in their discussions with him, or even attempt to verify that Fort Gay even existed. They even refused to take the word of Fort Gay's mayor, who contacted Microsoft to plead Moore's case.
Only after the media took notice did Microsoft executives intervene and reinstate Moore. They apologized but did insist that policy allows them to ban someone for offensive language.
While Microsoft is overly sensitive about making sure your home town isn't gay, it has no problem with the language you use live over their network. Xbox Live allows gamers to play online with other gamers and communicate with them via headsets. Language used during these live game sessions is unregulated and can be vulgar and obscene. Microsoft rarely monitors or bans users for language used during live play.
But at least all those 15 year-olds with filthy mouths aren't being subjected to the horrors of Fort Gay.
