When Liberals Attack! Olivia Wilde is the ACLU's Poster Child

Actress Poses for Promotional Poster for Controversial Group

The ACLU worries about its public image. After all, they spend most of their time suppressing the free speech and open expression of those they disagree with, especially conservatives. When they aren't doing that, they are suing to have nativity scenes put out of the public eye or attacking the Boy Scouts for standing by their principles. Of course, all of that pales in their support of Al Queda members and the pedophiles of NAMBLA (The North American Man/Boy Love Association).

It should be no surprise, then, that the ACLU will look for any way to distract the American public from what they are doing. To that end, you can't get much more distracting than Olivia Wilde, the stunning actress from movies like Tron Legacy and the television show House.

In the fall of 2010, the ACLU called on Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the "Hope" posters for Barack Obama, to make Wilde their poster girl on a new ACLU promotional piece. His patriotically-themed poster features Wilde as the Statue of Liberty, draped in an American flag while holding a bullhorn and clipboard. Apparently, the message the ACLU is trying to send America is that they are the most patriotic survey takers.

The poster features the ACLU logo and includes the phrase "Leading Freedom Forward." The use of strong patriotic themes in a promotional piece would usually be criticized by the left, if it had been used by anyone on the right. Conservatives are often accused of patriotic grandstanding (for example, when Glenn Beck used Fairey's "Hope" theme for a series of posters with the Founding Fathers), but when a liberal like Ms. Wilde literally wraps herself in the flag for the ACLU, no one criticizes.

Ms. Wilde explained her motivations for agreeing to pose for the poster. "I believe we have to judge our society not by how we treat the privileged and the empowered, but by how we treat the silenced, the condemned, the undocumented, and all those whose views and rights are deemed inconvenient. The ACLU works tirelessly to uphold the promise of the Constitution, and I am proud to support their courageous and necessary work."

I find Wilde's comments interesting. If the ACLU does in fact represent the silenced, why are they not defending the rights of the unborn, human beings who cannot defend themselves and need protection? It seems the ACLU is only interested in defending your rights if you are "privileged" enough to be in the cultural elite or "empowered" by liberal thinking. Otherwise, you're out of luck. Rather than fighting for equal rights and access for all, the ACLU seems intent on creating social entitlements for some at the personal cost and exclusion of others.

I'm not going to mock Ms. Wilde for her choice to pose for the poster. I'm also not going to ridicule her or question her intelligence for stating her position. That is something liberals do to conservatives, especially female conservatives, and all the while, the ACLU turns a deaf ear.

What I will question is Ms. Wilde's choice to make such a blanket endorsement of a group that spends most of its time restricting the thought and expression of those it does not agree with. When the ACLU defends pedophiles and terrorists, even some on the left scratch their heads. Either Ms. Wilde is unaware of their radical actions and positions, or she doesn't mind them. That alone should craft your opinion of Olivia Wilde.
