When Liberals Attack: The Prop. 8 Musical

Victor Medina
In 2008, a group of actors and entertainers decided to protest a vote on California's Proposition 8, which would outlaw gay marriage. Of course, Prop. 8 did pass by a large majority, but not after many of Hollywood's elite tried to paint opponents as bigots and religious fanatics.

One such group of entertainers created a web video for FunnyOrDie.com called "Prop 8: The Musical" in which they portrayed Christians as uptight hatemongers. Jack Black then appears as Jesus Christ, and plays him for a fool, saying shrimp cocktails are just as sinful as sodomy.

The malicious mockery of Christ and the Bible gets worse, as scriptures are taken out of context (especially Leviticus, which is a book of Jewish customs, not laws to live by). They claim, in song, that the Bible says you can stone your wife and sell your daughter into slavery. The Christians then admit that they "pick and choose" which verses they follow, to which Jesus then says that America was created on a "separation of church and state."

The Christians change their tune, however, when they learn that there is money to be made off of gay marriage. They then sing the praises of gay marriage, happy that the money generated will "save the economy." It's all pretentious, unfunny theater, as these entertainers are too dense to realize that they are the ones that come across as the arrogant, intolerant ones.

Among those who created and appeared in the video are Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Neil Patrick Harris, Rashida Jones, Craig Robinson, Adam Shankman, Marc Shaiman, Jordan Ballard, Margaret Cho, Barrett Foa, J.B. Ghuman, John Hill, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Rashad Naylor, Nicole Parker, Allison Janney, Kathy Najimy, Jenifer Lewis, Lake Bell, Sarah Chalke, Katharine Leonard, Seth Morris, Denise Piane, Lucian Piane, Richard Read, Seth Redford, Quinton Strack, Tate Taylor, and Brunson Green.

The real question is whether one is willing to make a counter-statement with their pocketbook. It is a statement not based in censorship, but in the idea that we are free to refuse to support those who marginalize conservatives as idiots and bigots and ridicule the things they hold sacred. This means not buying Jack Black movies (even if the kids love "Kung Fu Panda") or watching TV shows these actors star in. For some, it is too much to ask for. Where do you stand?

@ Cheryl, did you watch the video? Also, what about the other actors?

I will not be buying Jack Black's movies. Thank you, Victor.

I found the video hilarious, AND, the state has no business dictating if gays can be married or not. I am as conservative as they come, and am so sick of Christians and Conservatives taking issue with Gay marriage. It is none of your business. It is also anyone's RIGHT to make a parody musical out of ANYHTING. They were some actors in there that I absolutely hate for their political beliefs, but many I also greatly like. I would not call this a liberal attack (of which there are many every day!), I would call it a common sense attack. One final note, Leviticus IS in the Bible, and your statements lead even more to the fact that Christians pick and choose.
