On Cinco de Mayo 2010, the Suns wore special jerseys featuring the logo "Los Suns." The alternate jerseys featuring the Spanish phrase is commonly worn to celebrate Latino heritage among many pro sports, basketball and baseball included. However, Suns ownership and players took the opportunity to protest the passage of Arizona's illegal immigration enforcement law, despite the fact that most Arizonans (including many Latinos) support the law.
"The frustration with the federal government's failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law," Suns owner Robert Sarver said. Canadian Steve Nash (an immigrant working here legally) went a step further. "I think the law is very misguided," Nash said. "I think that it opens up the potential for racial profiling and racism...I think it represents our state poorly in the eyes of the nation and the world."
The Rev. Al Sharpton took the opportunity to put himself in front of the cameras once again, staging a protest on May 5th in Phoenix while wearing the "Los Suns" jerseys.
Most of the statements by Nash and Sarver misrepresenting the Arizona immigration law went largely unchallenged by the media. The only words of wisdom coming from the sports world seem to be those of Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who told ESPN "I don't think teams should get involved in the political stuff. The American people are really for stronger immigration laws, if I'm not mistaken. Where we stand as basketball teams, we should let that kind of play out and let the political end of that go where it's going to go."
