When Liberals Attack! Superman Hates America
Icon Renounces American Citizenship, Thanks to Hollywood
Superman once stood for truth, justice, and the American Way, but times have changed. We used to believe America was a place where people were free to live their lives and in turn, made the world a better place. Now, many criticize their own country as a selfish den of capitalism that takes advantage of (and wages war on) smaller, poorer countries. Even the First Lady admitted she was ashamed to be an American until the country voted her husband into the Oval Office.
It should be no surprise, then, that even Superman is turning his back on America. In one of the greatest "condescending douchebag" moments of all time, the comic book character renounced his American citizenship in issue #900 of Action Comics. The short story in which Superman forsakes his American upbringing, and seemingly, its traditional values, was written by - surprise - a member of the Hollywood elite: movie scribe David S. Goyer.
Claiming he wants to be a "citizen of the world," Superman renounces his American citizenship in Goyer's story, which was meant to help redefine and jump-start interest in the Superman character. The story was hardly well-received by the American public. The comic was released the week Usama Bin Laden was killed by U.S. military forces, causing a wave of patriotism unseen in America since the days after 9/11. Good timing on that, Goyer. Critics didn't care much for the story either. Eric Shirey of Yahoo called it "over the top" and a "slap in the face to the country Goyer calls home."
Wanting to serve the world is a fine ideal, but Goyer seems to forget that few other countries outside of the United States have been so charitable to the peoples of the world. It's easy to focus on the wars in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, but Goyer fails to recognize America's generosity when, for example, psunamis hit Indonesia and Japan. No other country exports charity, resources, and goodwill like the United States, and the world knows it.
In 2003, DC Comics even imagined a world in which baby Superman landed in Russia instead of America. The comic series, called Red Son, depicted a much different world, one where peace and freedom was scarce. For Goyer, being unappreciative of the freedom he has been given feeds his delusion of the world and the American Way. Thankfully, Superman can rise above any enemy, especially liberal writers.

There is just one more problem for the Man of Steel. The new Superman movie, now in production, was written by...wait for it...David S. Goyer.
