When Married Men Will Not Wear Their Wedding Rings

Mary Thatcher
Prince William's recent marriage to Kate Middleton has sparked a new public interest in men and wedding rings that they sometimes refuse to wear. Royal officials have revealed to the public that although Kate will certainly wear her wedding band, as most women do (I know of almost no woman who has yet to refuse to wear one), her husband will not. William has stated that his decision is merely one of personal preference as he is not a wearer of jewelry, although to some public eyes it could also mean something else: he does not want anyone to know he is married.

This may sound like a paradox, since his wedding is being broadcast internationally, so one would be hard pressed to even know someone who was not aware Prince William is now married. Private married male citizens might have a better chance of getting away with not wearing their wedding rings for that reason, especially when they are almost never seen in public with their wives. By not wearing a wedding ring, such men are publicly stating their availability to women they fancy to pick up, and of course, that women will have no clue if the man is being sincere or not. Some married men are incredibly good actors in pretending to be single and unmarried when they do in fact have wives at home - and sometimes even children. Most women who fall for these men almost never even bother to do a background check on the man, even though it is a very easy and inexpensive process. By the time the woman finds out, she is usually crushed and winds up blaming the man, even though she herself knew she had the willpower to not fall for a man who smooth-and sweet-talked her. By then, the damage is done, and the woman usually ends up feeling guilty and will terminate the relationship, even if the man continues to pursue her to justify his low self-esteem.

William jokingly told the press the reason he will not be wearing his wedding band is because he plans on getting tattoos, but there is a very slim chance he will be getting a tattoo on his left ring finger. It will be interesting to see just how close of an eye Kate will keep on William when it comes to his public appearances and the other women he will be keeping company with. Kate is a talented business woman in the fashion arena, and if William really is the spitting image of his father Prince Charles, then she may as well expect him to have a roving eye and act giddy around the young beauties of British royal society.
