When You Should Not Buy a New PC

Timothy Scheiman
I have written articles in the past on upgrading and buying a new PC. This is all well and good but is there a time when you should not buy a new PC? This article gives you some valuable tips so you pretty much know when your getting your moneys worth and when your not.

Basic needs computing

If you just using a computer to do basic things like email, surfing the Internet, letter writing, etc. Than what you have now should last quite a few years. No use going out spending money on something you don't need. With a little maintenance your computer should last for a good many years. Unless you have some hardware failures than you would think about upgrading or buying new. Just make sure you keep your computer from running sluggish by removing excess files and defraging. Its important to dust inside with a can of air to keep your computer well ventilated.

Compatibility

As long as the software, OS, and tools is still compatible than you should be okay and not need to buy new. However, if you run new software and upgrade to newer OS than you could have some compatibility issues. Some people use the same things day in and day out and have no reason to get something else. This is fine if this gets the job done for you. Unless you want to see what your missing if your happy with what you have got more power to you.

Time factor

If your not spending a lot of time waiting for your computer to boot up or move on to the nest process than its all well and good. You have to consider how much of your time is your computer taking from you each day to get the job done. If its taking an hour when it should be taking only a few minutes than you should look into buying new. Computers are a tool to help us run our lives more efficiently if it is not doing that than you need to get a computer that will. As long as the computer you have is accomplishing your daily tasks efficiently than you don't need to buy new. A few sticks of RAM maybe all you need to be more efficient.

No dead components

If everything is working fine and no annoying noises are coming from your computer than you should be fine for now. However, replacement parts like power supplies for example may not fit in your old machine if it goes out. You could have dead ports or connections on your motherboard which cause your computer to start failing. Some parts are inexpensive and still available. Its when you run into problems finding a replacement motherboard or power supply that you may just want to go ahead and buy new. You could upgrade but if it costs just as much to upgrade as it does to buy new than your better off buying new.

Gaming

Gamers especially online gamers upgrade every couple of years. If your not into running games that task your machine than what you have may be good enough for now. If your into games though you may want to make sure you have the latest specs. Gamers need to stay within a few years old thresh hold. Its even better if they can stay with a year. Online games can be very demanding and require a lot of resources. It takes a lot of processing power and RAM to stay up with the current gaming industry. Plus newer graphics look so much better. For gamers response time and FPS is very important. FPS means frames per second the higher this number is the better.

There you have it this should give you a good indicator when its time to buy new. It also lets you know if your okay and don't need to invest in new if what you have works just fine for you. Why spend money when you don't need to?

Excellent tips! I never buy a new PC; I build a custom one for my needs (or upgrade an old one). I hate all of the junk (like Vista..lol) that is loaded on the ready-made PCs of today. Great article.
