When is it Okay to Call Someone a Bad Driver?

All the Different Ways We Label People as Bad Drivers

Patrick Evertsen
The words ,"I'll Drive", should have sent me into a panic, but I was tired so I decided to give in and let my wife drive the rest of the way home. A nap on the way home seemed like a great way to relax. As soon as we started driving however, I realized that the only thing that was going to get a chance to relax was the break pedal. Swerving in and out traffic, speeding like a race car, I tried everything in my power to slow the car down, but now matter how hard you try pushing the floorboard of the passenger side with your feet the car will not stop. After making the hour and a half drive in an impressive hour and ten minutes my wife pulls into our driveway. Safe, but shaken I vow to never let her drive again. This is when the argument starts, she claims she is a good driver while I claim she is the worst. Who is right? How do we determine when someone is a bad driver?

Accidents. If you can't drive without hitting anything else then you are probably a bad driver. Some accidents are caused by the weather and other uncontrollable things but most accidents are caused by people just being bad drivers. No matter what the excuse is for the accident, the person still hit another car while driving so if you have some accidents on your record you are probably a bad driver.

Race. Does your race make you a bad driver? When we pass a bad driver on the road and look in their window to identify them the first thing we notice is their race. A sense of understanding happens when we find out that the driver is Asian as we suspected all along. Asian drivers have long been the scapegoat of bad driving, but I feel it is undeserved. I've seen many white minivan moms who are way worse than any Asian driving today. No race is not guilty of having a bad driver representing them so I feel that race does not make you a bad driver.

Tickets. How many tickets do you have? One or ten. The more tickets you have the worst the driver you are. Cops usually give tickets to people that are driving out of the ordinary when compared to everyone else. Is the driver going faster than everyone else? Are they swerving in and out of lanes? Are they making turns where they should not be? I agree that some good drivers do get tickets every once in a while but if you have more than a few in a year then you are probably a bad driver.

Gender. Are women bad drivers? I certainly think so, but maybe I'm biased. It just seems like every time I pass by a bad driver and look to see who it is it turns out to be a woman nine out of ten times. Does this make every woman a bad driver? No, it just makes it more likely that if you are a woman then you may be a bad driver.

The Stare Factor. Does everyone stare at you as they drive by? They may be doing this for a reason. You may think its the car you are driving or that funny bumper sticker you just got, but it may be because of your bad driving. Just think of all the times you have passed a bad driver and looked over to see who could be so bad. Everyone looks so if you are getting stared at by people passing you by it may be your bad driving that is the cause.

Basic Rules. Here are some basic bad driver no nos
1. Never drive in the fast lane unless you intend on going fast.
2. Someone with a flat tire on the side of the road is not a reason to slow down and look.
3. Reading, makeup, and texting are not to be done while driving.

The basic formula for determining a bad driver would be to give a point for every infraction that you have above excluding race and gender. If you find that you are a bad driver and you happen to be Asian or a woman or an Asian woman than know that you alone made yourself a bad driver but everyone will understand why. As for my wife she actually passes this test without being labeled a bad driver. Is she a good driver? We'll have to wait for another article to determine that.
