One can, also, witness others in the act of their own extraordinary day. I dodged a mattress lying in the middle of the interstate recently. I looked in my rear view mirror to see a man pitifully trying to rescue it while traffic was whizzing by all around him. I'm sure this poor man's day began with that ordinary cup of coffee. He never anticipated that mere hours later he would be trying to save his mattress off the interstate while people gawked as they sped on by him.
I had an extraordinary ending to what started out as an ordinary overnight business trip. I won't mention the urban town I was in to protect its image. I had made reservations at a hotel near the function I was attending. The name of the motel ended with the word Plaza. It conjured up images to me of chandeliers and room service by hunky men in tuxedos. The only red flag for me was that it was so cheap. (?) When I first walked in, I immediately noticed that the refrigerator was chained to the wall in the lobby. The second red flag should have been that there even was a refrigerator in the lobby. Also, where were the chandeliers? I did, however, notice that there was quite an influx of people floating in and out. I reasoned that there must be something good about this place. So, I decided to proceed to my room. I figured the hunky men in tuxedos would be well worth the stay. However, when I got to my room, I noticed that the remote was glued to the coffee table and I could have sworn I saw blood stains on the wall. '˜Hmmm -- What kind of other dimension was I in, I wondered?'
I was feeling a little tired the next morning because of all the yelling and high pitched squealing going on all through the night. As I was locking the door to my blood-stained room, I noticed a sign that said, "Rent by the Hour Motel"!!! I was caught off guard in an extraordinary setting.
My mother fell into bed with the kind of exhaustion that can accumulate after many nights of very little sleep. She finally had the opportunity to have an ordinary full night's sleep. How could she have known as she drifted off to sleep that her day would take a turn for the extraordinary. She suddenly woke to the sound of a chainsaw's buzzing. It sounded like a "mean person" was trying to saw off the doorknob to the front door of her house. She tried several more times to fall asleep only to keep hear the disturbing sound of sucking, snorting, buzzing noise of an obvious chainsaw. She finally jumped up and frantically called the police. Sensing that a chainsaw murderer was on the loose in their small town, they rushed over to her house.
The alarmed police wandered all through the house expecting any moment to come face to face with that "mean person". After quite a search, they had no choice but to leave my mother to possibly face her "death by sawing."
Although danger still lurked, my mother decided to go back to bed to await her impending doom. As she was falling asleep, she heard the alarming noise again!! Feeling ever so slightly humiliated, this time, however, she realized from where the dangerous sounds came. They were from her own "extraordinary" nose -- better yet--the sounds of her own deep snoring!
Just one of your average ordinary days turning upside down and taking an unexpected turn for the extraordinary. It's what makes life so interesting!
