When to Plant Onions

Sharifa McFarlane

If you want to know when to plant onions, bear in mind that onions don't like waterlogged soil. It is best to plant onions at a time when it is not raining too heavily and when there is no frost on the ground. If you live in an area that does not have any frost, you can plant your onions in the autumn.

According to Aggie Horticulture, farmers living in areas where there is no frost will get good results when they plant their onions in the middle of October. Farmers in these areas can grow their onions from seed, and sow their seed in the soil. They don't need to start the seeds indoors and then transplant them.

Also ensure that the type of soil you plant the onions in is well-drained. Onions like water, but not too much water.

Onions like rich soil. If your soil is poor, it is not the right time to plant onions. Add compost to your soil, and then plant your onions. You can use inorganic fertilizer if you don't have any compost prepared.

If there are lots of weeds in the area you want to plant the onions, make sure you remove all of them from the root before planting your onions. According to David Monks and Larry Bass, an onion hoe is the best tool to use to remove weeds from around onions.

If you live in an area where there is frost, spring is the best time to plant your onions outdoors.
