"When in Rome" - Plot Synopsis

Working as an art curator at the famous Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Beth (Kristen Bell) has the success she has worked so hard for and for which she has sacrificed her social life. Early disappointments in love have left Beth single, driven and distrustful. It is pointed out that what Beth needs is a male version of herself.

When Beth has the opportunity to prove herself to her tough boss Celeste (Anjelica Huston) by putting together the displays for an important art show, her plans become somewhat complicated when her younger sister announces she is getting married in Rome to a man she has known for only two weeks. At the ceremony in Italy, Beth meets Nick Beamon (Josh Duhamel), the confident but often klutzy best man. They soon have the beginnings of romantic chemistry, but right as Beth decides to open up and take a chance, the groom's cousin walks up, passionately kisses Nick, and walks off with him. Beth gets a little drunk at a fountain dedicated to love right outside the church - a fountain where people toss coins and wish for romance. Beth decides to "rescue" some of the wishful thinkers by removing four coins and a poker chip, unaware that local lore says if you take someone's coin, they will fall in love with you.

Soon Beth is pursued by street magician Lance (Jon Heder - Blades of Glory), narcissistic male model Gale (Dax Shepard - Let's Go to Prison and Kristen Bell's real-life fiance), Italian artist Antonio (Will Arnett - Blades of Glory, Let's Go to Prison), and sausage king Al Russo (Danny DeVito) as well as by Nick Beamon. Beth learns about the power of the coins and discovers none of the men whose coins she holds really loves her - they are just under a spell. Beth must figure out how to break the fountain's spell to get her life back.

"When in Rome" - Review

"When in Rome" is not the funniest or most romantic movie out there; in fact, in many ways it is a rather lame film relying on silly gags for laughs. However, this movie does have some things going for it, first and foremost the fact no one is hopping into bed for some quick Hollywood-style promiscuity. "When in Rome" is a fairly decent family-friendly film other than a nude painting of Beth done on a building by an ardent artist. Beth's four suitors all have some funny moments, and the romance between Beth and Nick is not without charm.
