There is no known specific cause of rosacea, but it is a skin condition that appears to run in families. These families may have a gene that causes two over reacting skin proteins to cause a third protein to cause the red blotches associated with rosacea. These are inflammatory reactions to an excess of free radicals in fair skin.
How do you know if you have rosacea and not another skin condition that causes redness? People with rosacea blush and flush very easily in reaction to changes in temperature. They will have what appear to be small acne outbreaks around the nose, but they tend to have dry and not oily patches. They can also develop thick red skin on some areas of their face and even have broken capillaries.
People with rosacea may think they are having an allergic reaction because many times different substances will trigger the red flushing. Stress, temperature changes, acne products, and even chlorine can trigger a rosacea flare up.
Over the counter antibiotics may help some people with roscea, but there is not cure. The doctor can prescribe topical antibiotics like Orecea, MetroGel and Finaca. Other treatments for redness include lasers . Lasers can resurfaced the skin relieving the thick red skin that will not go away with topical medications. It helps to find what triggers your rosacea and avoid the triggers as much as possible. It also helps to avoid harsh wrinkle treatments and acne scrubs as these will only increase the redness.
Mild antibacterial soaps and cleansers like Cetaphil are good gentle cleaners for people with roscea. Naturally calming ingredients like feverfew in organic lotions can calm the skin. Generally, any lotions with mild anti inflammatory ingredients will help calm the red on skin with roscea. Just make sure you do not have sensitivity to the ingredients in some organic formulas. Hyper allergenic skin care products may be a better solution for people with a tendency towards roscea.
Anti oxidants in skin care products can also have a calming effect on the skin. Green tea extracts, alpha lipoid acid, and vitamin C ester can all help protect your skin from damage from the environments. While they may provide some calming effect on your skin topically, nothing replaces a healthy diet when it comes to having a healthy rosy and not red complexion.
