When to Start Lessons for Your Child

At What Age Do You Start Lessons for Your Children?

Mike Burnside
It seems that children are beginning to start learning music, sports, and dance at a much younger age. Kindergartners are sitting at the bench of a piano and playing Chopin, while even younger children are jumping around the gymnastics floor. For children to get good at dance, sports, music, or even visual arts, they need to start young. However, how young do you start your child on their road to stardom? Let's look at the four major extracurricular activities that many young children are exposed to and at what ages that most experts agree to start them at.

When to Start Your Child in Dance Lessons
Dance and the movements involved with them can be very rigorous. Heavy training in the dance arts should be delayed until your child is between the ages of 6 to 8. This gives their bones time to fully form. Many parents are encouraged to start their children between the ages of 2 to 6; however, these lessons should be less-intensive movement classes. Interview your child's potential dance instructor and make sure that they will not encourage your child to work through any physical pain.

When to Start Your Child in Sports
Starting your child in sports will usually depend on what the specific sport is. Many parents begin letting their children participate in sports by the age of five. At that age, it is important the child be exposed to the sport. Utilize the experienced and knowledgeable coaches to help involve your child in the sport.

When to Start Your Child in Music Lessons
An indicator to when your child should start music lessons is, as soon as they can hold on to the musical instrument, they can begin to take lessons to learn it. Not every child will achieve greatness no matter how many lessons they take. The goal should always be to expose your child to music so that they may have an appreciation for it. Musical instruction can be beneficial to all children, no matter what skill level they achieve.

When to Start Your Child in Visual Arts Lessons
Visual arts are one of those lessons that can be taught at an early age. Starting at birth, you can expose your child to the experiences of color and textures. As they begin to gather more coordination and agility, you can begin to let them experiment with finger painting and watercolors. If the desire continues, then begin to expose them to the fine arts and then step back and watch as they discover their own talents.

I started playing piano when I was 7 and took lessons through high school. I still enjoy it and it even helped me pick up guitar. Music lessons are great and extremely valuable.

I have experience with dance and piano, and your advice is good. I like the idea that not all kids are destined for greatness - believe me, as a piano teacher, yep - this is true. However, everyone has some ability and the ability to appreciate the arts.
