When Success Matters

Rik Rodriguez
I have been hearing all my life that it doesn't matter if you succeed, it's how you play the game. I understand the saying but I have never enjoyed it and certainly up until now have never used it. Success seemed to matter more when I moved out of the house and had to feed myself. Only if you were a weather man could you be incorrect everyday and still have a job. Well, Ok that was sort of harsh but more of our jobs, and lives for that matter, require a great deal of success to just survive.

Most of us require certain things to maintain some type of a so called normal life. We have been conditioned that we need a bank account, a drivers license and a mortgage to go along with it. All of these accomplishments seem sort of small but you must be successful in acquiring a bank account and a drivers license other wise you may have difficulty getting to work and cashing your check. So success is a necessary factor in our life's. Most of us have been successful at something in our lives. But not all of us have been able to carry on that success to other aspects of our lives. I know people who are wildly successful at business but total failures at their relationships. Probably because they may not realize that relationships can be as much work or more than businesses. So success matters in all aspects of our lives and of course can have a profound effect on all who are around us.

If you have ever had to tell your wife that you just got fired from your job when she may have been looking forward to paying off those nagging bills. You might know what I mean. I believe that their may be times that we are not supposed to succeed. But maybe we are to stubborn to see it or we think that we really need success at the time. This reminds me of a friend of mine that has always referred to me as a champion surfer. I refer to myself as a competitor that has never gotten better than 3rd place in any contest. Al the years I competed just once I wanted to take first place. I still have that goal to accomplish. But my friend still considers me a champion. Oddly enough to me, I suppose because he doesn't know anyone else that has placed in any contests. So he has taught me me that success can come in many parts of your life even when you are not giving yourself credit for the accomplishment. You are still a success.
