'When the Sun Goes Down,' Selena Gomez Album Review

Wendy Dawn

June 28 Hollywood Records released the latest pop rock album from Latina teen star Selena Gomez and the Scene. From the title song to the hit single "Who Says" the album is full of New Wave vibe.

New Wave pop rock is the latest take on techno club pop, and Gomez brings a spirit of fun and vivid vocal inflections. The album is sure to be a hit among Gomez's young fans and may even pull some European fans with its New Wave groove. It is a fun and upbeat album, perfect for summer listening.

"Love You Like a Song" starts the album in full swing, which it carries on with "Bang, Bang, Bang." Gomez told Billboard that she likes "Love You Like a Song" because of its repetitive nature. It's one of those songs, said Gomez, "that you can't get out of your head."

Gomez teamed up with Pixie Lott on "We Own the Night." This is one of my least favorite songs on the album, and is one of the few places the album drags. I think Gomez would have sounded better and been a little peppier on this song if she had stuck to performing it on her own.

"Hit the Lights" re-ignites the pop-techno feel, followed up by "Whiplash" in which Gomez exhibits a bit of her vocal flexibility.

"My Dilemma" is fairly generic, but is another song with the feel Gomez's teen fans will like. It's the break-up standard for the album.

"That's More Like It" is another fun song full of energy and sass. It's definitely one for the girls.

"Outlaw" doesn't feel like a good fit for this album, but at least it offers a different feel, while "Middle of Nowhere" picks back up the New Wave pop rock feel and carries it home.

The albums final cut is a saucy, Spanish version of "Who Says," entitled "Dices."

Young Gomez fans will run this album and several singles up the chart this summer. Older listeners may even find something to enjoy from the kick back to the 80's synthesized European styled album.
